Interviews: My Life Story

I don’t know how many interviews I’ve been to the past few months. I probably have at least 2 every month since I’ve been back on the job market.

I had told my friend I have another interview this Wednesday… she said, “Another one? How many has that been now?!”

To be quite honest, I haven’t kept track. I probably should though.

I would like to think I’ve gotten quite used to the interview process. Basic questions pertinent to the job, how have you handled certain situations, how would you handle certain situations. They’re looking for key words: “I don’t take it personally, I do my best, I remain calm and polite,” etc.

There are also phrases interviewers say to you… “Please feel free to call me regarding any questions or concerns you may have.” “You’ll be hearing from us within a week via email or phone.” “HR will contact you with the next step” Dreaded words right? Oh, it’s also a good sign when they walk you to your exit, elevator, stairs, etc.

This past week I don’t exactly know how to read how the interview process went.

#1. They found out I’m still employed… “How many days/weeks notice must you give your employer?” Interviewer did lay out that she may be “jumping the gun,” to use her phrase of words.

#2. “What are your hobbies?” Answer: Blah, blah, etc. My family is musically talented and we are occasionally asked to provide special music. This past Sunday my sister sang for a wedding and I played the piano for her…etc. Their comment: “Wow! We may ask your family to perform at our events.”

#3. If you have any questions please feel free to contact HR. [Ugh, HR the dreaded letters] they will direct your question to one of us and we will get back to you.

#4. I like to gauge the probabilities of a second interview, job offer, etc. I ask how many people they are planning to interview or have applied, etc. “How many people are you planning to interview?” The demeanor of the interviewer became slightly rude as if I overstepped boundaries… “Four.”

The next step—a second interview with the Finance team consisting of eight members. The most I’ve had is 3. Apparently, this is going to be gauge how well I fit in the team.

Wednesday I have an interview with a school district. Friday I have an interview with a Hotel in Anaheim.

And so the cycle starts…again.

My Name is … JUROR # 10 Part 2

Continuing from yesterday’s post…

What I thought about this experience:

I enjoyed it. It was definitely an experience.

Sidebars are used to approach the judge in a semi-private fashion where only the prosecutor, the defense attorney, the judge, and court reporter are the audience.

The council makes up the defense party and the prosecuting party.

Raise your hand if you need to use the bathroom, its ok.

Possible objections: hearsay, vague, relevance, leading, argumentative, offer of proof..

Rulings: sustained, overruled, stricken.

A few funnies in the court room:

There were three instances where I remember laughing wanting to laugh.

#1. The defense witness was being cross-examined by his defense attorney…the witness turns to the judge turns back to the attorney…leans into the mic… bathroom break. I’ll be right back.

#2.  Another defense witness… (honestly, i wanted to laugh the whole time he was up there. This guy was a complete joke.) Anyway, the District Attorney was asking very simple questions and the defense witness could not give a straight-forward answer. For example, Question:  is said defendant a lieutenant? Answer: No, he’s actually an Animal Control Officer 2, just like me but he acts like a lieutenant. They didn’t give him the exact title because there isn’t enough funds to pay him on a lieutenant salary. Melanie: I want to LAUGH out LOUD!

#3 Closing arguments . . . the District Attorney was able to give his closing arguments first. Then the Defense Attorney provided his. The District Attorney then gave his final push to the jury. Among that final push…he brought out a picture of a red herring. He called many of the Defense Attorney’s “reasons/excuses” red herrings. Somehow, I saw that coming…and was thoroughly amused that I was right. I was also entertained that he even provided a picture…of a red herring. I think I chuckled…aloud. Maybe even smiled at the District Attorney…oh how I would miss him.

If any of you want to know what my case is about let me know. I can divulge although I have some type of fear that the DA might google about this specific case he was on so I don’t want to provide any names and specifics. I may have a password protected post about it instead. 🙂

My Name is … JUROR # 10 Part 1

Here is the post you have all been waiting for. My jury duty post! Of course, I say it tongue in cheek like… no one is really waiting for me to post, let alone post about jury duty. No one notices I haven’t posted about jury duty, either. I’m glad I straightened all that out for myself so you didn’t have to do it in the comment section below 😉

Jury Duty.

What I liked:

My days start at 10:30 am.

Typical lunch time: 11:30 am – 1:30 pm. The court itself is closed from noon to 1:30.

My days end no later than 4:30, sometimes earlier.

The District Attorney was the prosecutor, I got to see his pretty face every day. If I believed in love at first sight..that was it. Such intellect, beauty, and personality.

I went home for lunch.

Some days I even took a nap.

It was nice.

What I disliked:

The court room was always cold.

I didn’t have a name.

I was referred to as my juror number according to the seat I had.

I was unable to talk to anyone about the case.

I was unable to talk to my beloved readers about what went on inside the courtroom or my head about the case, for that matter.

Mostly, I was unable to talk to the District Attorney. Oh how I loved admired him. (You do realize I am kidding right? Melanie would totally never ever fall in love with someone by the sight of them. It goes against everything Melanie.)

After lunch, I always found myself a little drowsy.

Cross examinations were full of objections and sidebars prolonging the case from 3-4 days to a whole week.

The jury deliberation room was freezing as well, fyi.

Tomorrow I will post about my experience-what I learned and a few funnies 🙂

Stay tuned!

My Experience with Student Loans

I paid off another student loan! One more to go. Let me share a few things I’ve learned, maybe it will help you.

Read your statement. I got my loans through Sallie Mae. It has all the information about your loan, interest rates, monthly payments, automatic withdrawal, etc. Read it! Find out how many loans you have, what are the interest rates on each, when are the due dates, etc.

Research. Find out if you can consolidate your loans-I had 3 different loans and all three had different amounts and different interest rates. There are requirements for lowering interest rates or consolidating your loans. Find out if you qualify!

Do the math. Sallie Mae conveniently worked out a payment plan to my demise. If I had paid less than $100 every month for the next 10 years, my three loans would have been paid off. Of course, they didn’t mention how much in interest I would be paying. If I tripled the amount every month for each loan I would have paid off the loan in 3 years with more of my payments being applied to the principal rather than the interest.

Pay extra. It doesn’t hurt to go on spending fasts every now and then to apply the money “saved” to your loan. You’ll feel better about yourself.

Pay attention. If you’re planning to pay extra I strongly advise you to pay 2-3 days right after you paid your monthly payment. In that way, the extra payment will be applied directly to your principal. Pay attention. Check your loans several times a month to monitor when the interest kicks in and starts accruing.

What’s your interest rate. I had three different loans. I had three different interest rates. Two were fixed rates and one was a variable rate. Read about the variable rate. What causes it to fluctuate, how to steer away from fluctuating rates, etc. Always pay off the highest interest rate first.

Use your savings. I don’t make that much money. My yield on my savings account does not exceed  my interest rate on my student loans. If you’re able to pay off a good bit of your loan with your savings DO IT! Chances are you don’t have a savings account yielding 5-6% to cover for the interest accruing on your student loan.

Make extra payments. It doesn’t hurt to make extra payments. That kicks back your due date for your monthly payments. It doesn’t mean if you made two payments in November you don’t need to pay in December. Pay in December! Only use up that extra month if you’re in an unforseen financial bind.

I enrolled in automatic withdrawal for each loan. I specifically made extra payments to the loan with the highest interest rate. I went on spending fasts-no eating out, no clothes, no buying anything-all that extra money went to the loan with the highest interest rate.

If you have any further questions-ask away. I hope I can help and hopefully these tips will work for you!

Welcome to my Randomness XVII

I’m in interview overload at the moment. I interviewed with Metro for an AP Clerk position specifically under the union. I had an interview with ExEd in West LA yesterday for Accounting Analyst. Today, I had an interview with USC for Accounting/Cash Managing/Database system.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Confusing I know. I will tell you regarding USC, I feel blessed: About 200 applicants were screened by HR and passed onto the Hiring Manager. The Hiring Manager has interviewed 10 people so far.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

To be quite honest, the fact that I interviewed with USC is pretty cool. Of course, my expectations aren’t parked there. I will do my best preparing for each interview but whatever happens, happens and I will be grateful no matter what!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Moving on to the non-serious aspect… uhm, is this weird to you?

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I was just wondering if anyone else thought it weird.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Oh I’m also wondering who else gets Columbus Day as a Holiday? I do. I think it’s weird since we don’t observe Veteran’s Day but then again we also celebrate Cesar Chavez day.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining.. Give me all the Holidays you want! I’ll take them! 🙂

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Oh goodness this LA weather is crazy! It rained Mon, Tues, and Wednesday. Today, Friday its about 85 degrees outside.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Sorry, my brain is moving quite slowly while thinking of all the randomness that’s happened in my life. I’m still stuck on interview mode and today’s interview was at least 45 minutes which is the longest interview I’ve been through.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Granted I’m enjoying polishing my speaking skills and thinking on my feet. This is as close as it’s getting in a classroom setting for me, at least for now.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Can i just say I love blogging?! It’s quite therapeutic for me. 🙂

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I must say, my faithful readers and commentors (is that a word? What’s the proper term for that?)… I appreciate YOU! Yes, you! Whenever I see a comment it makes me feel quite special. Not to mention I love reading YOUR blog as well!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Well its leave at 3pm day because of the expected Holiday traffic. I must finish things up before I leave.

Oh and those of you who live in LA & Orange County.. it’s flashing all over the freeways. Child Abduction.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Have a most wonderful weekend! I’m hoping to capture some parking fail pictures this weekend 🙂

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Hopefully I don’t encounter anymore random bathroom flushing signs…

Hey! It’s MELANIE

Remember when I said my sister was going to take pictures of me during our family vacation?

I lied, we never got to do that. We did squeeze in a very pretty family picture of the gorgeous view that looks like a fake background 🙂

Avila Beach

She was however able to take pictures after my dad’s party….

looking at these pictures, I probably should have put make-up on to define features alot more but eh, maybe next time. I literally mean MAYBE.

Guest Blogger: 100th Post

Hey Mel’s blog lovers! =]

I’m Marlize from Every Girl’s Corner and today I get the honor of hi-jacking this blog for a super guest blog post. I am the 100th blog post! Sweet hey?!

The reason I got awarded this greatness was probably because of sympathy…Every 50 comments I have a guest post and Mel was the lucky winner of one of those spots. A few hours later I stupidly noticed I missed my own blogs’ 100th party!! Sad, sad, sad.

After I miserably posted a blog post about my lack of attention, Mel promised me the honor of getting this 100th post. She really is that amazing!

So in honor of the celebrations I will list a few things I love about Mel and her blog!

  • She is blatantly honest!
  • She does the coolest randomness posts EVER!
  • Even after she was told she can’t eat most food, she was still positive!
  • Her awesome ‘bad parking’ photos!
  • She thinks I am a good writer =]
  • Her ‘no-nonsense’ attitude!
  • She knows what she wants, even if others’ don’t understand it!

Basically, it comes down to this…Mel is a great person. A wonderful blogger. And an amazing friend!!! I am so glad to be part of her 100th post celebration and to know I was on the road with her to here. Even if I jumped onto the road a little after the starting line =]

Let’s all raise a virtual glass to her and hope we are all together again for the next 100! Or even 1000 =]

Have a party cupcake! Mel, hope you can eat cupcakes…. If not….

May I have it please?? 😀

All pictures are from We heart it.

Welcome to my Randomness XV

I got an email from him… and now I feel like not replying forever.

Well, maybe not forever but at least a month or month and a half.

Is that bad?

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I’ve not spent any money so far, unless you count gas but that’s doesn’t count, I think. At least, I’m saying it doesn’t.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Going to the LA County fair today after 5pm because it’s only $5. My friend works there so we’ll do the whole employee parking deal woowoo!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Oh got my first AWARD from Marliz3e!

I’ve yet to tag 10 people, it’s coming! 🙂

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I’ve still not fully adjusted to being home. Sometimes I wonder if I’m supposed to be living in California if I have no friends in California. When I mean friends I mean the type of friends you can sporadically count on to meet you after work for an hour at Starbucks or grab dinner with when you get off work late.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Believe me I know somethings you plan for but somethings planning just doesn’t happen. Just saying…

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

This SoCal weather is weird one day this week I had my boots, leggings, and long sweater-type blouse. The next day I wore a polka-dot skirt, blouse, and peep-toe wedges. Is that supposed to happen that way?!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Volleyball games: so far still undefeated. The second game set we won the first and the second game we were down 10-20. We ended the game somewhere around 22-24 in our favor. It was intense!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Please take me away…

Preferably where this will be the sunset...

Thank you,

Melanie

Please, for my sanity…

There are just some things I would ask you not to do or to do, for my sake.

PLEASE

1. Do not step on your brakes every 5 seconds when the car in front of you is 15 feet away. It’s really annoying to find that out when I pass you.

2. Do not diddle-dawdle when you are waiting for the light to turn green. There are people behind you waiting for the light to turn green as well and want to see how many cars can go through before the light turns red.

3. When you tell a joke, please do not be the first person to laugh. It makes it awkward when the joke wasn’t that funny.

4.  Is it too much to ask for a definite yes or no answer when I’m texting you about plans? I don’t understand what K means.

5. While we’re on that subject.. KK doesn’t help either.

6. When driving and you are on your phone please stay in the slow lane. Somehow older people on their phone in the fast lane makes people agitated, me included.

7. When you cut me off and I honk at you, I honked at you because you cut me off. Don’t look at me like I’m some crazed woman.

8. I wouldn’t honk at you if you were going faster than me. Speed up!

9. I understand FACEBOOK is the new thing but if you really wanted to keep in contact with me you’d use your phone, you have my number. I don’t understand how me getting a FACEBOOK helps our relationship because you don’t even send me a text every now and then. I know your phone is always with you. Facebook is only with you when you log on, just saying, I don’t understand.

10. Instead of assuming I’m looking at the calorie intake, ask me. It saves you from looking like a doofus when I say I’m looking at the ingredients because I’m allergic to a lot of things…

Thank you in advance,

Melanie

Welcome to my Randomness XIV

My life has been quite uneventful this week.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I’ve been sleeping on the couch this week.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I found bangles that fit from H&M (finally) . I have tiny wrists so its difficult to find bracelets/bangles that stay without making my wrists look even smaller!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Some reflexology lady is coming to my house tomorrow after lunch.

We’ll see how it goes!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Paid off another student loan! One more to go 🙂

I can also cross that off this list.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Looking over that list… I’ve crossed a few things off 🙂

  • Renewed Disneyland pass and added WOC viewing!
  • Bought a KBF pass went 3x in the summer.
  • I went to SD-Pastor Merritt’s church and Chicago
  • I went to the beach-Manhattan Beach/Huntington Beach
  • I went to Hollywood, Roscoe’s, Pink’s and OC.
  • Went on a 2 week spending fast vs. one week 🙂
  • Still working on that knot.. hopefully reflex lady can help.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I’m going through withdrawals. I need to get out of LA County again..

Yes, I know I just went on “vacation” but literally one day out of LA was totally not enough!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I’ve been drinking more than a gallon of water this week. CRAZY! I’m just always so thirsty…

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I’m slowly getting used to not eating the untouchables. I still have to buy a journal to list everything I eat.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

My new snacks have been cereals. All of the actual snacks have soy and peanut contamination, lol. I’m thinking of making my own granola/trail mix, with cereal. 🙂

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

This past week I have- I had LIFE cereal, Kellogg mini wheats, and craisins. Yummy munchies

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Another volleyball game tomorrow! Oh, we won both sets, undefeated, no matches lost.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

My goal: get my overhand serve back. I haven’t been practicing unlike last year where I did it all the time for volleyball.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I’m going on another spending fast. This time I’m leaving all my credit cards at home. Meaning, my gas tank can never be close to empty and I cannot forget my phone anymore.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Have an awesome weekend everyone! I’ll be studying, yeah… [severe sarcasm]
