Interviews: My Life Story

I don’t know how many interviews I’ve been to the past few months. I probably have at least 2 every month since I’ve been back on the job market.

I had told my friend I have another interview this Wednesday… she said, “Another one? How many has that been now?!”

To be quite honest, I haven’t kept track. I probably should though.

I would like to think I’ve gotten quite used to the interview process. Basic questions pertinent to the job, how have you handled certain situations, how would you handle certain situations. They’re looking for key words: “I don’t take it personally, I do my best, I remain calm and polite,” etc.

There are also phrases interviewers say to you… “Please feel free to call me regarding any questions or concerns you may have.” “You’ll be hearing from us within a week via email or phone.” “HR will contact you with the next step” Dreaded words right? Oh, it’s also a good sign when they walk you to your exit, elevator, stairs, etc.

This past week I don’t exactly know how to read how the interview process went.

#1. They found out I’m still employed… “How many days/weeks notice must you give your employer?” Interviewer did lay out that she may be “jumping the gun,” to use her phrase of words.

#2. “What are your hobbies?” Answer: Blah, blah, etc. My family is musically talented and we are occasionally asked to provide special music. This past Sunday my sister sang for a wedding and I played the piano for her…etc. Their comment: “Wow! We may ask your family to perform at our events.”

#3. If you have any questions please feel free to contact HR. [Ugh, HR the dreaded letters] they will direct your question to one of us and we will get back to you.

#4. I like to gauge the probabilities of a second interview, job offer, etc. I ask how many people they are planning to interview or have applied, etc. “How many people are you planning to interview?” The demeanor of the interviewer became slightly rude as if I overstepped boundaries… “Four.”

The next step—a second interview with the Finance team consisting of eight members. The most I’ve had is 3. Apparently, this is going to be gauge how well I fit in the team.

Wednesday I have an interview with a school district. Friday I have an interview with a Hotel in Anaheim.

And so the cycle starts…again.

Thank you! Thank you!

Received another award October 9th. Unfortunately, I was unable to relish in this award until now BUT better late than never! 🙂

Thank you Princess Diaries for such an award and the kind words that went with it!

As a side note but one along the lines of thanks and compliments, I received an indirect compliment yesterday. I say indirect because it wasn’t said to me, to my face, but relayed to me by a trusted source. I say trusted because the compliment-or and the trusted source are good friends, to say the least.

I digress, the compliment: The guys are missing out… Melanie is a good catch.

Welcome to my Randomness XVII

I’m in interview overload at the moment. I interviewed with Metro for an AP Clerk position specifically under the union. I had an interview with ExEd in West LA yesterday for Accounting Analyst. Today, I had an interview with USC for Accounting/Cash Managing/Database system.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Confusing I know. I will tell you regarding USC, I feel blessed: About 200 applicants were screened by HR and passed onto the Hiring Manager. The Hiring Manager has interviewed 10 people so far.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

To be quite honest, the fact that I interviewed with USC is pretty cool. Of course, my expectations aren’t parked there. I will do my best preparing for each interview but whatever happens, happens and I will be grateful no matter what!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Moving on to the non-serious aspect… uhm, is this weird to you?

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I was just wondering if anyone else thought it weird.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Oh I’m also wondering who else gets Columbus Day as a Holiday? I do. I think it’s weird since we don’t observe Veteran’s Day but then again we also celebrate Cesar Chavez day.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining.. Give me all the Holidays you want! I’ll take them! 🙂

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Oh goodness this LA weather is crazy! It rained Mon, Tues, and Wednesday. Today, Friday its about 85 degrees outside.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Sorry, my brain is moving quite slowly while thinking of all the randomness that’s happened in my life. I’m still stuck on interview mode and today’s interview was at least 45 minutes which is the longest interview I’ve been through.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Granted I’m enjoying polishing my speaking skills and thinking on my feet. This is as close as it’s getting in a classroom setting for me, at least for now.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Can i just say I love blogging?! It’s quite therapeutic for me. 🙂

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I must say, my faithful readers and commentors (is that a word? What’s the proper term for that?)… I appreciate YOU! Yes, you! Whenever I see a comment it makes me feel quite special. Not to mention I love reading YOUR blog as well!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Well its leave at 3pm day because of the expected Holiday traffic. I must finish things up before I leave.

Oh and those of you who live in LA & Orange County.. it’s flashing all over the freeways. Child Abduction.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Have a most wonderful weekend! I’m hoping to capture some parking fail pictures this weekend 🙂

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Hopefully I don’t encounter anymore random bathroom flushing signs…

Operation: Life Clean-Up

This past weekend I re-activated my de-activated Facebook to retrieve pictures of my dad. I decided to post a Facebook status with my number and blog url. I also decided to RE-de-activate on Monday, which I have done.

I had 10 friend requests and 30 notifications from different friends within 48 hours. Most from friends I already keep in contact with.

Someone please help me understand why I must keep my Facebook? I’m told it’s more convenient to keep in contact with friends. If friendships were all about convenience, we’d have so many friends. I’m sorry, I’m not your friend out of convenience for you.

I don’t keep in contact with friends because its convenient for me. I keep in contact with friends because I care. I think of certain friends every now and then and I send them a text, an email, or I leave a voicemail.

Friendship does not consist of likes, comments and wall posts. We build friendships on conversations, struggles, and laughter.

I realize distance hinders a lot of those things we build our friendships on but I, as an idealist would rather not ruin friendship for convenience. I am perfectly happy to wait for an email, text, or phone call rather than receive a wall post consisting of 8 words to sum up the past 6 months of your life.

What have I discovered through my Facebook ordeal? I have realized through my inability to disappear completely from Facebook, I am incapable of letting go those who need to be let go. What does that mean? I am the type of friend who cannot let you go until something drastic has been done to our relationship-lying, deceit, etc. If it is merely a lack of communication, I believe we are still friends. That belief is untrue.

For example my friend Christina. I had de-activated my Facebook in February. Unbeknownst to me, she had changed her number sometime after that. She found me by messaging my ex-bf for my number to let me know she was getting married and wanted to send me a wedding invitation.

There are ways of finding those you really want to get in contact with.

On the other-hand, I had texted a college friend “I will be de-activating my Facebook.” She then proceeded to ask, “Why?!” I told her, “Andre broke up with me and I need to get away from it” I never heard from her until I had sent a mass e-mail about my blog. Mind you, it was two months after I had text her about my breakup. I do not know how difficult it would have been for her to send me a text saying something like “Sorry, I don’t know how you feel, etc” This particular friend, a term I am using very loosely in this instance, was a friend in name but not in action. She would not care if I had Facebook or not. She would be categorized as one of those “friends” I need to let go of.

What am I doing? I will be going through Operation: Life Clean-Up.

I’m starting over but allowing people to find me, either through email, blog, or my no-picture Facebook.

I know you are thinking “FACEBOOK?! You just ranted about Facebook.” I make allowances for those friends who have made it a point to send message me on Facebook and I understand they never check their emails, have limited texting plans, and phone calls are out of the question because we’re on different time zones or a different continent altogether!

I will not add you if I already have your phone number, email, and blog url-it just doesn’t make sense to me. Albeit, my blog views jumped to 100+ each day I was on Facebook I’m not too crazy about trafficking to my blog if no one comments or communicates with me.

Again, I’m a difficult person to understand and I sympathize with you; I really do. I know you are probably thinking I want to boost my ego so I can find out how many people are searching for me, who want to keep in contact with me, who miss me, etc. I’m sorry to let you know that is untrue. I am perfectly happy to become a hermit and have my blog as my best friend. Ask Renae or Danny, they will agree with me.

LA County Fair

Friday, I went to the LA County Fair.

I must interject, the weather has been absolutely horrendous last week 2/7 days were cold/gloomy days. The rest of the days were 80-100 degree weather!Today I feel like a piece of bacon cooking in a frying pan.

I involuntarily parked in the VIP area. I got lost in the parking lot and couldn’t find the general parking. It was already 10pm were they really going to do something about it? Just to let you know the parking lot is confusing.

We saw the animals.

Clydesdale Horse

My friend Sarah paid to ride the mechanical bull. She stayed on for about 3 minutes.

Sorry it's blurry.

I like being random and taking pictures with cardboard cut-outs to place my face in:

Chuckwagon Cut-outs

We didn’t eat the Chuckwagon BBQ but Bubba’s BBQ instead. This is about $13 we got 2 plates of these and shared it with 6 people- 2/6 were guys; 1/6 was my brother. We were full.

I went to the food counter to grab knives, forks, and napkins for everyone. The guy at the counter told me I could take the whole thing. I told him, “Sure I’d sell these utensils for $0.25 each.”

I’m assuming a girl trying to get a guy would ask if one could take him.. sorry buddy, you’re trying with the wrong girl.

Just smile and walk away…

We also walked around the shops…I sent this picture to my sister, she said I should buy it for my dad’s birthday. I decided not to.

My brother thinks I'm weird. Now you do too 🙂

My friend bought a fried Klondike bar. I had some but I couldn’t taste the chocolate or the ice cream. I just tasted the fried mixture stuff. I do love fried ice cream though so I’m pretty sure a fried Klondike bar would be amazing.

Fried Klondike Bar

There were more fried stuff you could buy…

I’m not quite sure how you can deep-fry cheesecake…

We also stumbled upon this…

Bacon fetish...

Yes, chocolate covered bacon. I had to interrogate someone about this. Upon further investigation, they are already packaged. They are refrigerated. Can I just say GROSS! Cold bacon?! Oh and the picture looked like regular potato chips just imagine them as chocolate chips. (Sorry, no picture it was dark and the sign background of the bacon chocolate picture was yellow.) I didn’t ask about the bacon wrapped Oreos. I would have probably thrown up…

We ended the night with funnel cake. I didn’t think I needed to take a picture since those were one of the normal things people eat. 🙂

Welcome to my Randomness XIII

Tomorrow my volleyball games are at 5 and 7pm.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I have a friend from college coming for the LA Country fair. Hopefully I get to hang out with her. Albeit she only lives in SD so I could always visit.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

My lesson for the past week has been contentment and it’s a battle.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

From now on, I’m going to try and respond to all comments. I always appreciated people replying to my comment. So, now I’m going to try to do the same.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Bear with me, sometimes I don’t have a reply. I suppose a staple should be “Thanks for stopping by, come back soon :)”

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Sounds like it should be one of those state leaving signs… States have signs welcoming you….then they have signs thanking you for coming…Random, I know.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

The reason I know? For graduation we drove from GA to SC all the way to ME. We saw a lot of state welcoming signs and thank-you come again signs.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

My cousins were supposed to spend the night tonight and we were going to go to Roscoe’s. Alas, my cousin got hired for a job. Sad no Roscoe-cousin bonding time but I’m glad she got a job.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Hm, I don’t know if I’m going to the Fair this year. Anything good?

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Considering I can’t eat anything… lol, probably not. Ugh, I never got to have my fried Twinkies.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

The Kashi brand has become my new best friend. If I can’t find anything to buy at the store I just look for the Kashi brand. I’m bound to find something I can actually eat!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I wonder what people think as they see me pick up box after box looking at the side-I wonder if they think I’m looking at the sugar and calorie information or the ingredients.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Oh and vacation was wonderful! I’ll have to bug my sister about pictures. BUT! Vacation couldn’t have ended sooner than my 2 coach purses, ugh. Shopping fast here I come.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Of course, not after I go to LOFT tomorrow because I have a 30% off coupon and 25% off coupons on purchases. I’m in need of tops-blouses, shirts, etc.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Tailor lady could you please hurry a little so I can rein in on my spending? I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you 😀

Who knew soy was in everything?!

Today I was called in to Jury Duty. I was ready to “serve”, as they call it. One problem: I’m going out-of-town tomorrow and won’t be back ’til Monday night.

I wasn’t sure what was going to happen so I was going to wing it.

I arrived and asked for a postponement right away. By the way, this is my 2nd postponement request. Unfortunately, I did not know what date to postpone it to so I picked 2 weeks later.

Since I didn’t know what was going to happen I didn’t pack a lunch or bring my half-gallon water bottle. Before clocking in to work I decided to stop by the store.

I stopped by Target to grab something I can munch on. I roam the aisles, reading the ingredients of everything. A handy-dandy thing they do is on the bottom of the ingredient list certain items are bold. MAY CONTAIN: WHEAT, SOY, PEANUT, ETC.

Makes it easier for me, kinda, each item I put back, I get a little discouraged that I won’t be able to find something I can just grab. The term hurry in and grab something no longer exists.

What exactly did I pick up? Crackers, goldfish, granola bars, triscuits, wheat thins, cereal mix, etc.

If I don’t see peanuts or soy in bold I proceed to read the ingredients more carefully, yes, it actually does have soy. SOYBEAN OIL. Oh my goodness, it seems like everything has soybean oil in it. Oh and sometimes I’ll see this- MAY CONTAIN SOY. What does that mean? Read the ingredients, it will say CANOLA or SOYBEAN OIL. Couldn’t they just pick one?!

I move onto the nuts aisle. I’m allergic to peanuts and almonds-everything has almonds and/or peanuts in them! Roasted almonds, deep roasted almonds, goodness! They even have lime-covered almonds, sounds gross to me!

Thirty minutes later, I walk out with cashews, sunflower seeds, and KASHI crackers.

My First Trip to the Allergist

Yesterday I went to an allergist. I didn’t know what to expect exactly. I talked with a few people who went to the same allergist I saw. One of them had back testing and the other had it on their arm…

Me? It was my back. I was given a sheet of different foods and told to check off what I eat.

Maybe they should have told me to check off what I did NOT eat.

The only things I did not check off on the sheet: barley, malt, coffee, hazelnut, and sesame oil.

Had I known what the consequence of checking off vs. non-checking off was, I would have lied and said I don’t eat.

I’m kidding. It was definitely quite an experience.

I laid on my stomach and the nurse cleaned off my back with alcohol. Yes, alcohol does sting me.

After my back was alcohol sanitized she proceeded to write on my back the different types of food I would be tested on. I could not have anything touching my back-my hair or hospital gown, etc.

One by one she began to poke me. Ok, I lied. It wasn’t just a poke. If you’ve ever sewn on buttons imagine that. You stick the needle through the button-hole and pull through so the thread is pulled through completely. Yeah, except imagine that in one swoop. Now imagine that over and over again. Yes, after a while it becomes somewhat painful.

Too bad as they tested me I couldn’t taste it in my mouth 🙂 One can think of weird things lying prostrate on the examination table.

After the first line of testing I starting anticipating the amount of pain I would feel. The pain grew with each “hook” especially the closer they got to my lower back-less skin and flesh to “hook”. Oh and what did they hook into my skin? The type of food I had checked off. If I remember correctly, the nurse said 90 “pokes”. Honestly, I lost count after 36.

After the poking, I had to lie still for 15minutes. No touching my back, no letting anything touch my back, no itching, etc.

The results?

Oh, there’s different levels. +/- , 1, 2, 3, and 4.

3-4 are STAY AWAY.

+/- , 1’s are mild reactions.

Please rephrase your question to: what are you NOT allergic to?!

Soy, almonds, potatoes, green peas, peanuts, celery, cucumber, salmon, scallops, tomatoes, cherries, and peaches. I missing anything?

Soy-soybean, soy sauce, tofu, etc

Peanuts- in the bean family. No beans of any sort.

Green string beans are ok-I tested negative for that.

Although I tested positive for salmon I’m thankful I can still have shrimp, lobster, shellfish, etc. Ah-I can still have SUSHI!

I’m still going to stick to my diet not as religiously though. A little bit of rice every now and then, etc.

After we left the doctor’s office I was overcome with itchiness. I’m assuming it’s from all that testing they did. I showed my brother my back and he called me a sicko! It was pretty nasty I looked in the mirror you can see red dots, scratches, bumps, etc. I’m assuming the more pronounced “scars” are where I tested positive.

My sister was laughing when I told her what I was allergic to. When we were little my mom made carrot and celery juice for us to drink. LOL.

My family LOVES salmon.

Majority of foods we prepare contain SOYsauce.

And potatoes are carbs-which I love love love!!!

Goodbye french fries, for good 😦 maybe. haha.

Oh…and the weather plays a major part in my eczema. I didn’t react so strongly at school because it was humid and sticky. I ate a lot of potatoes and soy products, ignorantly of course.

I most definitely want to go to China now 🙂

Oh and I would recommend seeing an allergist and being tested for food. It’s quite informative and most definitely helpful!

This week consisted of food…

Wednesday at KBF we walked down the street towards McDonald’s and saw this mexican food place. Olivia and I saw Carne Asada fries and California burrito and we were sold.

We had a california burrito in SF and we’ve been trying to look for it ever since. Consider it found!

California Burrito

Carne Asada fries & California Burrito

Carne Asada Fries

We had Pink’s for dinner at KBF. West Hollywood seemed to have more delectable choices-these were decent as well..

Friday for lunch I had sushi. Found this place here.

Spider Roll

Tasted like they fried the crab a little too long but I like how they have caviar with the dish. Definitely added to the flavor.

Salmon Roll

The salmon pieces were big chunks and very fresh. The best salmon rolls I’ve ever had.

Friday night after RU we went to Maxim. I ordered eggplant with szechuan sauce. It was so good! Our foriegn exchange students made this for us once. What they did was fry the eggplant then sautee it with oyster sauce.

Olivia, Jeffrey, Tim and I also ordered drinks…

L to R: Hawaiin passion, rainbow surprise, black cow, and lemon tea.

Olivia's drink: Strawberry ice cream on top of shirley temple drink

Saturday lunch: Sorry Jay but me, Dar and Tita Gail agree we found a place where Famous Daves does not stand a chance. Actually, we attended Dar’s company picnic catered by Canyon City BBQ and they had beef brisket, chicken, potato salad, beans, and biscuits. The meats were tender and juicy. oh… man. it was AMAZING.

From Cayon City Website

Canyon City Menu

Sunday evening Ms. Warner’s foreign exchange students never had a hamburger. We went to Legends. I’ve only been to Legends once in High School. I forgot how big the portions were. I ordered a large Legends Sampler to share with everyone… French fries, zucchini fries, fried mushrooms, and onion rings–they were fried to perfection. The zucchinis and mushrooms were juicy.

Ms Warner cut me a small piece of her carne asada burrito.

Olivia also gave me half of her burger. I didn’t eat it-still in my fridge.

Mushroom swiss burger

At the end of our meal, I brought home 3 plates of leftover food. . .

I don’t think I’ll eat this whole week. Oh and I’m still 100 lbs. LOL

San Diego Weekend

This weekend I attended a Ladies Retreat in National City at Bible Baptist Church.

I got to see Jireh and Jackie! I haven’t seen them in years…

Lunch was awesome-bbq chicken, pancit, lumpia shanghai, and rice. yummy yummy yummy…

The only downside, I was in a complete food coma. I couldn’t concentrate on the speakers and my sole goal was to not fall asleep. ACCOMPLISHED. What did I glean? Sadly, nada…

For dinner, Olivia and I went to Sushi Diner.

My favorite roll was with baked salmon on the outside…ah, I am more than willing to go just for sushi diner. Any takers?

We stayed the night with Pastor Willie Del, Auntie Amy, & Grace!

For Sunday lunch Pastor treated us to New Panda Express Buffet. We tore up the seafood section!

In the evening, Olivia and I attended Pastor Ernie Merritt’s church in Escondido, Fundamental Baptist Church. We stopped at Rally’s for some fully loaded fries.

We also stopped at Jack in the Box to use the restrooms. We discovered the coke factory in a computer. Their soda dispenser was a touch screen computer with you choosing a soft drink, sprite, dr. pepper, coke, dasani flavor, etc. Say you chose sprite, you then had the choice of sprite cherry, sprite raspberry, sprite peach, sprite lime, sprite grape. OH MY WORD! Olivia and I probably spent 15 minutes in front of the computer pressing all kinds of buttons and trying everything! We walked away with vanilla coke and cherry coke.. ah… refreshing!

That evening they paid of their church debt. Such excitement!

Planning a trip down to SD for Sushi Diner, New Panda Express Buffet, and Jack in the Box… any takers?!?!?
